Looking to buy a compression tester.Any recommendations for a moderately priced one?Might borrow one, but hate borrowing tools.

Nothing to worry about. Its just a guage and a hose and a check valve. Plus they come with 3 different thread ends. Only thing I would pay attention to is to have good hose.

How can you tell the difference between a good hose and a bad hose until the bad hose cracks?

A good hose doesn't kink easily and seems tough. The accuracy is OK on less expensive units because it is differences between cylinders and ease of use that matter. If it is 5# off it is not important. Jim

I'd check SUMMIT AUTOMOTIVE, IF the H is the only thing you might test, a 100 psi gauge will be fine, but if you have domed pistons and planed the deck of the head a bunch, you might need a 150 to 200 psi gauge.
Advice I read in Hot Rod Magazine 50-60 years ago from C.J. Baker, loosen all 4 plugs a turn or two, replace the plug wires, start and run the engine, crack the throttle wide open 3-4 times then remove the old plugs. Check compression, coat the threads on NEW PLUGS with anti-sieze and install and tighten new plugs to proper torque. Start and run engine. I really don't care what brand of plugs you use, just make sure they're the right thread and heat range. Starting the engine and reving it up a couple times is to blow out any small bits of carbon that were loosened from the old plugs.
The anti-sieze on the new plugs is so you don't twist the threads off in the spark plug hole in the head. It's mandatory in aluminum heads and still a good idea in cast iron heads. Think I was about 12 yrs old when I changed plugs in my '39 H.
