Continental 4 flat head engine

I have a continental motor F163 in my Hyster Fork lift. What tractor uses this engine. The fork lift is probaoly 50 years old. I need to find a
distributor rotor. Thanks stan

Don't know if this will get you any closer or not, but Lincoln SA-200 arc welder used the F-162. Don't know difference between 162 & 163. Some SA-200's used magneto & others a battery/coil/distributor ignition system.

Stiener has a good selection of Continental parts. Additionally, there are a lot of forklift places that have parts for continental motors.

Continental used many different ignition systems.

Don't look so much for Continental parts, but try to determine what brand distributor, Delco, Autolite, etc.

Look for a number tag or engraved in the housing.

With that information you'll probably find some automotive application that will match. When you get one, compare closely though, especially the orientation to the shaft position!

A lot of manufacturers used the basic Continental F400 (4-cylinder flathead) block for a variety of applications .... Lincoln welders, Massey Harris tractors, etc. Those showed up as 124, 140, and 162 cubic inch versions, all the same except the cylinder diameter. There were two variations of the industrial versions according to a book I have here .... a 135 and also the 163. There were some slight size differences in pistons, piston pins, rings, and main bearings, etc. I have a spec sheet here in that book which lists all those differences. I doubt that the distributors or distributor parts were different. Both Autolite and Delco distributors showed up on those engines. Massey Harris 101 and 102 Juniors used those engines, and so did Case model V's (not VA's).

Massey Harris used the F-162 in the latest 101 Jr, and the 30. It was also used in the Cockshutt 540.

Remove points and take them to the oldest NAPA store you can find, look for the oldest counter guy. They should be able to match you up. Or post a picture on this sight, one of the sharp individuals on this sight will likely steer you in the correct direction.

Stan, as far as I know, the F162 used at least 2 different brand distributors. Mine, in my '46 Massey Harris 101 Jr. is a Prestolite. I've attached a pic of the tag on mine. I think Crazy Horse has a different brand on his 101 Jr. and his Continental may not be the F-162. I do not know the differences between the 162 and the 163.

Those Continentals can be found in a myriad of older Lincoln 'Pipeliner' portable welders also.

The F-163 engines while having the same bore & stroke as the F-162 they use a different crankshaft and a different head. The F-13 use a crankshaft that uses a thrust bearing similar ro more modern engines .

When you get the points out, get your dremmel out and dress them off and inspect them. Many points found in an older engine have thick bonded contact surfaces. You cant buy points like that any more. They are all plated with something and many times are defective out of the box.

massey harris used the continental engine also. dont matter what size engine as the distributor caps and rotors are the same . why cant u take the old one in with u to a napa or such store. let them match it up.

Maybe that's why no matter what I did to clean my new set of points I couldn't get juice thru them . I finally filed them to make them work.
