Continental L head Year?

I have Continental F-162 serial 31370 stamped on the block and also have what appears to be a cast date 1-16-Q on the right side of the block. I have an IH U2A 113 power unit, and the last letter in the date is A for 1955.
Did Continental use the Letter system for the year also, being that Q would be 1947? It has a rebuilt tag on the engine dated 12-53 bored out .040, STD Main and Rod journals, with the serial number stamped 31370.

I have contacted Montes, and there serial numbers don't match with my engine for some reason. Hopefully some one has old documentation on these engines.
