Converting Ford 4000 tach drive

I have a 3cyl 4000 diesel and saw a Ford that looked like mine engine wise except the tach drive was by the oil filter. Can that be done to a 4000?

Depends on the year.
On early blocks with screw in soft plugs
and canister type oil filter it can not be
done. On late blocks with press in soft
plugs and screw on oil filter it is quite
simple. You pry the soft plug under the oil
filter and change the cam to oil pump drive
gear then add the tach drive.
The early/late tachs are right hand vs left
hand drive however so you gave to change
the tach cluster to a 3600/4600 one.

Mine has the screw on type FL1A filter but looks like there is big round plate that adapts that filter to the block. SN shows the tractor being a late 71. If it requires a cam swap Im just going to leave it as is. I have the alternator conversion with tach drive but it routes the cable pretty close to the exhaust manifold thus the reason I was considering the conversion.
