Found this on the prairie and just wondering what the small protrusions are for in the middle. Holding something?

Just guessing but could it be a pan holder for a cook stove after you remove the stove lid so direct fire would hit the pan. Seems like that would smoke up the house. IDK.

Normally if the pot/pan sat in the opening it sat down some and pretty well sealed the hold to the pot/pan so it didn't smoke up the hose. As for the casting I would suspect it sat over an open fire outside.

look again, they're the eyes of the smiley face :)

It says Harmony 4248 or 4243 on the bottom. I guess the little protrusions must have went into holding whatever it was you sat on it.Thanks for the replies.

(quoted from post at 12:03:36 07/14/23) If the handle has a sideways hole, it might be a grate shaker to drop cinders into the ash pit. Jim

No holes in the handle. Maybe not as old as I think.

A cook stove does not have open grate places to set cookware. The wood fire would either smoke through the openings, or draw air in cooling the cookware. I googled round wood stove shaker grate many like it!! Jim
