Coolant Temperature Gauge

I'm thinking of adding a coolant temp gauge in an engine that has no water pump. Cool water comes from the bottom of the radiator, gets hot in the block, and thermo-siphons to the top and returns back into the top of the radiator.

Where should the temp sensor go? In the top hot water return, or in the cooler water at the bottom of the radiator?

I'd put it in the hot water return.

Closer to the upper hose. Warm water rises. Cool water falls. The lower hose should be cooler than the upper hose.

Look at any 2 cylinder Deere, right above the block in an elbow that goes to the radiator.

ya thats the hottest point on them 2 bangers. but we have no info on what engine. temps gauges are usually in the head
