Corn Binder

Curious if I can get parts for a old John Deere pto driven corn binder still. I am looking to use a binder for harvesting sweet sorghum in Michigan and a gentlemen has one for sale but needs upper gathering chains. Also doesnt have a back platform. Would like to find one close that's in good working condition at a fair price.

Ground drive binders in working condition without the bundle carrier are in the $1,000-$1,200 dollar range. PTO powered worth nothing. This is for use in Amish country. I would assume that things like the chains would be easy to get here but have had no reason to ask.

Thanks for the input. I would have thought the PTO version would be more desirable. It wouldnt matter to me if it was wheel driven or PTO, as I just can't see cutting a 1/4 to 1/2 acre with a cane knife. Thanks.

Since Amish horses don't have a pto, ground driven is valued by them.I would think a Pto unit would be far better for a guy with a tractor. Not to mention low demand snd lower cost. What I need is a pto grain binder.

Eh, depends on where. PTO binders are worth something in Pennsylvania because some Amish and Old Order Mennonites there use engine carts with PTO. Do a google search for BW Macknair. Should be able to get chains there if nowhere else. Also have a couple guys near me with farm stands who harvest mammoth sunflowers with them because locally it has become a 'thing' for people to put whole sunflower plants, or sometimes just the heads, out for the birds.

Larry has the prices about right, at least for an IHC which is the desired one. Original type gathering chains are available from the place mentioned in Pa. You can also update them to a roller type gathering chain that runs on the OEM sprockets, the place in Pa can help with that also.

I would bet chains will be easy to find and that Deere will still have some parts available. I stupidly passed on a PTO binder a few years back and am still kicking myself.

Hello Leroy,

Long time no talk.
When I did my McCormick binder, I got chain at the local NAPA store, so it is available allright.
Had to order it but no bother getting it.

Richard.
