corn chopping, sorta

Tried to get corn chopped today but had a bad day. We are combining the forage peas and barley and corn by chopping a half load of the barley then topping with corn. I'm using my 300 case chopper for the corn, but I kept having trouble shearing the shearpin on the head. Couldn't find the problem because everything worked when turned by hand and at slow speeds. Finally found a worn out chain that was binding under load. After I changed that it worked good again, but only got 4 loads one. Oh well, maybe tomorrow. The corn in the pic is what we planted on the fourth of July. Didn't turn out too bad considering the planting date.

Looks like the chopper is cutting a nice fine cut.Corn looks a little on the green side. Around here they like it a little further along.

Yeah that is a bit green yet, but the earlier stuff and the barley we are mixing it with is a bit dry so I think the mix will be good. Could start raining again any day too, so we're cutting it.

Looks good for fourth of July corn. I am surprised to see green leaves, the frost took the green out of SW MN but did not kill the crop. Rod.

Some of it got burned, the early planted corn got it worse for some reason.

Thanks for the video, that brings back memories. Back in the 80's we ran international 650 cutters. One had a blower and one was a direct throw like yours. I am pretty sure the case cutter is the same as the IH 650 but I could be wrong. The direct throw one could be heard for miles around, the one with the blower run much quieter. We still have both if you would ever need parts.

Your direct cut have a 540 gearbox?

It is 1000, but if I remember right, you switch the two gears in the gear box with each other, this lets you use the same gear box for 540 or 1000.

Great video Jon. What size tractor is on the chopper? Looks like an open station? Tractor and chopper sure look like they are doing a nice job. Corn down here in Southern Minnesota is very brown compared to yours up there.

If its going into a silo, I wouln'dt bother with the 1/2 load 1/2 load routine. Had a neighbor years ago that would do a load of corn silage, then a load of haylage, claimed it mixed just as well as the 1/2 load 1/2 load 'promanade'.
