Corn planter ID?

I have the opportunity to buy this corn planter for scrap price. What model is it? I know it need work but i have no idea what it would need or what it would take to get this operational. Can you guys help me out? Can anyone tell what it needs to be useable? Would it be worth it to buy and fix up. Mind its just going to be used to plant a few acres of corn. I just need it operational. Thanks all

Looks like a John Deere Model 290 Two-Row Corn Planter. I would buy it if I was in your shoes, but then again I buy everything John Deere so....

Even buying it just to save it from the scrapper would be a good enough reason for me, because they are only here once.

Thanks for sharing the photos. It looks like a very nice implement and I think that you will have a fun time finding out how it works and you will definitly enjoy it once you are able to take it out to the field!

Hope this helps.

I know what you mean about seeing it go to the scrapper. Im just wondering if i would have more in fixing this one then if i spent a bit more and got one the works. I can fabricate just about anything. So i could probably make it work as long as most of its there.

JD 290 and missing fertilizer boxes and internals and markers. Can't see inside the seed cans but those are the same for the 246, 290, 490, 494, 494A, 594, 594A, 694, 694A, 894A ans some of the 1200 series. Even plates and bottom of seed hopper parts are same as the 7000 plate planters. Fertilizer boxes are same for 246, 290 & 490. If you have good bottoms for the fertilizer boxes then you can ust the top part of the later larger seed boxes for replacements. You would need to straighten the hitch and the pict cuts off before showing the hitch on the front of the toung to know if the marker control- ball hitch is on or not. It is a clutch lift planter but pict not clear enough for me to tell if it is all there.

I agree - JD 290.
A neighbor who I rent cropland from has one in about the same shape. Same deal - scrap price. I know I can make it work (for my FIL's wildlife food plots - I have a 7000 6RN), but have been toying with the idea of converting it to 3-point hitch. Realistic? Easy way to lock the wheels in the lowered position?

I talked to the guy and he wants $50 for it. He also has a corn picker that i might pick up. I don't know the price he put on that yet but I might save it from the scrapper too.

Looks to me like you would be better off to at least find one that is complete, even if you do pay more. It will save you a lot of grief trying to get this operational.
