Cotter pins

I am rebuilding a gearbox on a batwing mower. Its not a lot of fun this first time, and so I would like to do everything proper so I dont have to do it again. Given that, what is the best brand of stainless steel cotter pins that you all would recommend as stops for the nuts holding the gears on the shafts? I know it is only a cotter pin, and on other projects I have simply reused the ones that were there. But in this case, I would just rather spend a couple dimes and use new parts.

Don't know why you need stainless inside a gearbox filled with oil.

I don't know if cotter keys are made in stainless steel, but if they are, I would expect McMaster Carr to have them.

We have a True Value hardward store in town and they had stainless. I bought a couple accidently recently and they were bears to bend around the nuts! I think that Ace has them too. I'm going to be pushing up dasies before that pin wears out. I think putting one in your gearbox is a good idea since it's a seasonal application and it might not be in oil the rest of the time. Don't ask me how I know.

You don't need stainless cotter pins. You need cotter pins of the correct size that fit tightly the hole in the shaft and castle nut if so equipped.

Dunno WHY you didn't didn't post the make and model of what you are working with, our gracious hosts don't charge extra by the character for the full details, AFAIK.

Perhaps because he had a question about where to source an extremely generic part and the make and model was irrelevant.

If you are going with new get them from an industrial supply house. You don't want the soft hardware store cotter pins.

There IS a difference. You will feel it the first time you install an industrial supply pin.
