Cows, cords, and chewing

Why do cattle chew the power cords on waterer de-icers? Workaround suggestions ?

The fellow from whom we bought our farm at Reedsburg, WI was using an electric saw in the back area of the barn. The cord ran close to the bull pen. The bull was able to reach the cord with a shocking result. Don't know how big the bull was, but it must have been quite a chore to get him removed from the pen.

Fish oil in the insulation is what the squirrels like, I think.

Got a puppy that liked to chew wires. I had my son hold him & put a hot & ground wire from a magneto in his mouth as I kept saying wires are BAD. I have a 1 cylinder FMmag with no impulse so I can run it with a cordless drill. I hit the switch, he give out a yelp & went & hid. He never chewed a wire again!

I put a larger section of plastic hose around both the heating cable and the water line. Make sure it's fastened tightly . This way, you can still get some hot water down it if it does freeze....and mine seemed to do that on occasion.

Most cords are plastic which is made if soy beans or sometimes corn. It's tasty for them. They will dig all through a construction debris pile to get to the pink insulation

Jon, the “greenies” or their pleasers took you for a ride. Word on the street is 99% of plastic is produced from Jed Clampett’s “Texas Tea” (crude oil). That’s according to Goggle/AI, my guess is there is a bit higher percentage of plant oil based plastics made, but that is just based on my gut feeling.

Yes, but not from the cattle licking or "eating" them. They quickly get brittle in the sunlight and the cattle will have them smashed to pieces after a couple of seasons.

This is what I do for the horse troughs Similar to what RESLLS described.

His U shaped version would allow you to cover the entire cord. None of my joints are cemented. Makes it easier to get the cord through.

cattle... my uncle used to have heifers in the dairy barn like to lick the light bulbs and of course those big tongues would bust them but they never seemed to get shocked. THey kept a good sling shot and pebbles in the parlor so if they caught them they would get a stone in the nose.
