Cracked Block

Okay, another foolish question I suppose.

Please look at the attached photo and advise of what should be done with this block off a 49 Farmall Super A.....or a similar block off any tractor.

as many as there are in fence rows, and salvage yards, I would get a different one, probably 135cid, but I am not a purist. Jim

That block will make a good boat anchor but that is about it. To bad your so far from me I have a block laying around from a B

Anything can be repaired but a professional job would cost more than a replacement block. What kind of luck you would have with a homegrown repair I would be rather doubtful of. So unless I had some kind of sentimental attachment to it or it was an extremely rare block, I'd find a replacement.

Yes, Burch is in Burlington as I recall. At this time I'm simply stripping the remains of an old 49 and wanted some opinions before junking the old block. I may put a '52 back together somewhere down the road. Do you deal in old Farmall tractors and parts - especially parts, including engines?

As long as the surfaces are flat the cracks will not cause any leakage problems. If you wanted to keep the same block because of matching serial numbers I would put some threaded crack repair plugs in the worst area of the crack and do just enough resurfacing to insure that the deck was true.

I echo what others were saying in look for another block. While that block might be ok, I would find another given it needs sleeves and such anyways.

Those blocks are hard to find. I had a cracked block on my Super C 'spray welded' at a local engine builder and it has been fine for years. The repair was cheaper than a used block, without shipping.

Over the years, I have taken quite a few C-113 engines apart cracked in the same way. The cooling system is thermo syphon, so no pressure to worry about. Bottom line, I have used them with no issues.

This decision is always a hard one, depending upon the outcome you want. If the engine has to be totally redone, I would get a new block. If you want to match the serial number and configuration (older block with no hydraulic pump opening), you should be able to reuse it. The problem is, you cannot predict how the block and head seal is going to react. It is one thing to pull the head off of a running engine (like for a valve job), and find that. It is another to totally go through an engine, and put all that money into it..........

In the first case, you are out a head gasket. In the latter case, you are out a whole lot more money.

Company called Lock-N-Stitch makes pins to repair cracks in cast iron. Our diesel tech at work has repaired some blocks and heads in past. He helped me several years ago repair a block that was cracked between cylinders.
