Cracked block

Well got the bad news, block is not repairable. Now have a 47 2N that needs to be sold. Listed it in the classifieds if any interested. Will be looking for a little newer tractor this go around. Thanks to all that have been with me on this ride. :(

I'm sorry to hear about your block.
Sometimes the deck is stacked against you.
On the other hand, when life hands you
lemons, make lemonade.
Over the years I have seen SO many guys here
in your shoes that bought a cheap N that
knocked or smoked and decided to rebuild it.
All too often, they found the block wasn't
good or the crank was bad and so they double
down and just open their wallets. Soon
enough they have a couple grand into just
the engine and they're trapped into
finishing the tractor.
A good running N is a great little machine
that will do lots of useful work for you.
But if you ever put more than say, $3 Grand
into one I think you are penny wise and
pound foolish. Because for that kind of
dough you can get a newer tractor that will
have more features and do more useful work
for you.
So though I hate to see you in this pickle,
I do aplaud you for the decision to cut your
losses and move on.
Any idea how much newer you plan to go or
brand/model you are thinking of?
There are lots of eyes here that could help
you look for something that would fit your
needs and budget.
Your general location would also help us
find one in your area.

I looked in some of the Ohio Craigslist postings . There are fair to good N's selling for $1200 - $1500 so I would assume that a basket case would be a hard sell at $500 . I hate to see an N parted out but you can't save them all . Selling the head , carb , distributor , governor , tires , etc then everything left over as one lot will bring 2 - 3 times the revenue if you have time and space .

How much land do you have to take care of ? Is it flat and open or hilly full of trees ?

I fully understand...
I found another block for mine.
I bought the tractor with shredder and about a year
later found out about what I had...
A JB weld job inside!!!
I bit the bullet myself (not for everyone) and had
another sound block magna fluxed, etc, etc.....

Now I have an over-engineered little tank that has
live hyds, pos control, hyd top link, etc.

My reasoning is that I love working on these and
know every nook and cranny on it.
The new stuff is expensive too....
I guess I chose the path I am on for some reason.

Hope you find a good working tractor.
Greg

If you buy a block rebuild the motor that tractor will last you a life time .I use one every day that is 75 years old

Most likely something with live power. Not to concerned about year, mostly doing mowing of 6 acres, little clearing of 4 acres. So will sell the N for parts use that money and what I would have put in to the motor to find another tractor.

Adding live pto to an N is fairly inexpensive . One of the advantages of an N on under ten acres is the low profile and quick easy turning . I really like the power my 3000 has but the manual steering will give your arms a workout around the trees . It doesn't like low limbs either .

For ten acres I would choose a new loaded Kabota w/ bucket and payments or a $1500 N .

I think I saw one on Marty 2374 last week for a naa, complete engine.A few people give hell, but I have bought a lot of things from him. He's been great with me.

I was the only bidder for an 8N head that Marty234 was selling . I won it for $9.99 and he shipped it quickly . Half of ebayers would have not let it go so cheap . Honest man in my book .

Sorry to hear that Kevin. I wish you were a little closer to me.
I have a 9N out here that has a complete engine in it.
I haven't done anything with it yet so I don't know the condition.
If your tractor doesn't sell and you reconsider keeping it let me know.
I'll get this one around a look at it sometime this summer anyway.

(quoted from post at 20:25:08 04/09/16) Adding live hydraulics to an N may be fairly
easy and relatively inexpensive.
Adding live pto to one is a whole nother
story.

LOL , Ya got me .

Thank you Royse, you are not that fa away. The main reason I was thinking about selling it was an engine is hard to find that doesn't need rebuilt.
JWA I'm in southeast Ohio where I77 and I70 cross.

Don't know your location - but I have an old front mount engine. I have no use for it. Located in eastern Missouri.

Thank you HCookie. Will keep that in mind, still trying to decide which way to go. Your only three states away, have gone further for something I wanted. :)
