Cracked block

Does anyone in North Carolina or Virginia have a good side mount block I can buy I thought I had a leaky head gasket but upon removal I found no evidence of any leak. Looking carefully I found a patch of what looked like Devcon on the oil filter side of the block under the filter bracket. The block is cracked on the edge of the head surface as well as on the side of the block. It held pretty well for about the first three years after I bought it but I guess rust loosened the patch and it started leaking pretty badly and overheating. The tractor is a 49 with a 51 engine. It ran pretty well before the overheating began. I am a little bummed right now.

You might try jbweld or try brazing the crack.

You could consider patching it again. Or look up "metal stitching" on google.

I have brazed up several cracked blocks, pump housings and other cast iron things. It puts much less heat into the block and thus less chance of warping it, clean it up really well preheat it and throw a blanket over it after you braze it up let it slow cool and it should be fine

I agree with Skip that brazing the block is the way to go. I have repaired a lot of cast iron items by brazing. It helps a lot if you use a Jet Fluxer (small tank filled with liquid flux, which is inserted in the acetylene line).

Brazing sounds like the way to go, although I've had good luck (so far) with J.B. Weld. My 2N has a crack on that same side running horizontal across the block for about 18 inches or so. I ground a 'V' along the crack and filled it with J.B. Weld, let it cure and ground that down flat with the surface. It's been at least 4 years now and is still holding. But in your case with the crack up along the head surface, that may not work.
