crank case magnet

Anyone ever heard of or put a magnet in the bottom of 2 cyl crank case to catch any metal chips/shavings ? Good idea ? Bad idea ?

Don't guess it would hurt a thing. They been doing that in boat motors gear case plugs for years and it catches fine metal shavings.

I was also thinking along those lines with cars and trucks. Transmissions also.... Thanks for the input...

FYI, I just bought a Kubota M6950 and did a full service. Mounted in the hollow center area of the oil filter, PS filter, and hydraulic filter is a fixed
magnet that you clean off when you change the filter. I thought that was a great idea.

Good idea to put it near the o-filter. Might try to do that on mine also if I can find and area that doesn't interfere with anything. Thanks..

Yes... I place small craft magnets in almost everything I have apart. Many applications come with magnets, perhaps on the drain bung, and it is nice to see those metal filings trapped and not circulating. If the case is aluminium, you can clean carefully and silicon the magnet into a safe place. I haven't had any problems so far.

All of them I worked on that thought never crossed my mind. Lack of maintenance and water in them seemed to be what kills them. It shouldn't hurt anything laying down in there. I still can't believe all the things I have found laying down in them !

My 1026 compact utility has a long one stuck in the center of the pock up screen for the hydraulics from the factory.

And boy was it loaded when i serviced it.

Thanks everyone for the input. Looks like I'll be putting a few in. And yes Mike M I also have found some 'interesting' items down there. Some were due to OE (head down) lol !

The very newest of the to cyls, was made in 1960 57 years ago they went all this time with out one. What makes you think you they need one now

Should have elaborated earlier. Tooth chipped off of fan gear and wreaked havock on the gov gear. Needless to say even after flushing everything out still have fragments when I run a stick magnet around. Figured this might be a good idea for at least a few more oil changes...
