Crank gear key

I was reading old posts about the crank gear getting loose from a worn key on the 8n. So if this happens your gear timing can become out of time. Am I correct in thinking this loose/slipping crank gear could cause low compression. Just like if the cam gear gets out of time. The engine can't run if crank gear is slipping.?? I'm gathering information so I will be aware of all possible problems. Thanks guys!

Good evening, Doug 13: i think you need to look at an actual crankshaft/gear/key set to see how they are made. Possibly a picture in a parts book. There is no way an 8N timing gear can slip around on the crankshaft as long as the key is in there. There is no way for the key to escape.

Possibly you have heard stories about the flywheel key in an air-cooled lawnmower engine. Those have a key that can shear, and IGNITION timing is immediately lost. Different situation, not like a timing gear drive on a tractor.
