Crank no start

Been a long time since i`ve been on this forum but asking for some suggestions. My Jubilee still has 6 volt system. Has brand new battery and starter was just rebuilt. When i attempt to start it first time every day it cranks over good but will not start. I can take my 12 volt jump box and touch it to the starter terminal and it fires right up. After starting it the first time i can shut it off and it will start the rest of the day on its own without jumping it. I only have to use the jump box the first time. Any ideas what to check? Thanks.

Terry Check cranking it over when trying to start it up.Do you have any resisters hooked in line with the coil?
Check engine compression all4 cylinders with a compression gauge first dry then wet.

I would check to see what the spark looks like at the plugs.

Check the fuel cut off and float valve. To be sure it is not flooded.
Also you could try starting with no throttle and no choke.

You are implying that it cranks properly on the first attempt, but slows down after that. Is that the case?

Has this been an ongoing problem for awhile? Is that why you have a new battery and rebuilt starter? If so, check the battery voltage with a volt meter first thing in the morning. It should be around 6.4 volts if fully charged. What I'm suspecting is something is draining the battery down overnight. It still has enough to crank the engine, but not enough for a strong spark at the same time. Then once you get it started in the morning it charges back up and is fine the rest of the day. You could also just disconnect the battery overnight and then see what it does in the morning.

The tractor doesn't get used a lot.The battery went bad just from setting plus it was old too. As far as the starter,it got where it would spin but would not engage the flywheel. After having it rebuilt it still acts up once in awhile. When it messes up I can tap on with a soft face hammer and it will work.

No resisters that I know of. Still leaning toward an electrical problem. Tractor runs great. The problem is just getting it to start the first time,after that it's fine.

For some reason it didn't post my reply. Try it again. I have noticed that it floods rather easy. I've had a carb kit hanging in the shop for years. May be time to use it.

I'll second what Jim L said and will add that if no drain is present, slowly charge the battery on a trickle charger and see if that helps. It sounds like you are starving the coil which is why it starts easily with additional voltage applied. Check the water/acid level in the battery as well. The plates must all be submersed in the solution. If it's low, add distilled water to cover the plates.
