Crank pulley removal

I have searched and found plenty of posts.
I didn’t find the answer to my question and no one even suggested it. There may be a reason for that.
I have the oil pan off. Should I put a block of wood between the crank and the block to keep the crank from turning while I loosen the pulley nut? Of course I don’t want to damage the block.
Tractor is a Super 55.
I haven’t tried a impact yet but I’m still curious about the answer to my question.

I assume if you are taking off the crank pulley you are going to do a complete overhaul? You may as well get the engine out and on a engine stand so its easier to work on. Getting the bolt out of the end of crank is the easy part, just use an impact, or a good jerk on that 3/4 drive you have on there will probably loosen it. Then you will need to come up with a puller to remove the pulley. There will be 4 tapped holes in the pulley to bolt a removal plate to. I usually stick a socket or something in for a spacer between the end of crank and your pusher bolt so you dont damage the end of your crank threads with the pusher bolt. It sounds like this may be your first engine overhaul? To be succesfull you are going to need a certain amount of mechanical skill, or someone to guide you along the way. Not meaning to put you down in anyway as its great you are taking the initiative to fix up your old tractor were a lot of people wouldnt even tackle, but it concerns me that you are asking how to get a bolt out?

I looked at the crank and using the counter weight to push against the wood at one of the 4 corners where there is a lot of metal looked like a safe bet. Of course you have to have your oil pan off to do this. It worked well. I didn’t like the idea of using the ring gear on the fly wheel to hold the crank.

The ring gear is what I thought of. A big flat blade screwdriver between the flywheel gear and something solid like the starter hole. Nothing wrong with that that I can see. Nothing wrong with the block of wood either.

Dread, Impact gun should snap that loose the block of wood will not hurt much (if needed). There are harmonic balancer pullers and a few others and it should come right off. You can buy those pullers pretty cheap on line or Harbor Freight. ALSO check your auto parts places and tool rental places some have these special tools to rent.
