Crank Shaft For Unstyled A

We just got an unstyled A, it is all there but it's locked up and in need of restoration. The crank shaft on the pulley side is worn down; my question is will a crank shaft form an early 50's model A work in this tractor or will we need to have this one built up and machined down? We have a good shaft from a late model A is the reason I'm asking this question. Thanks for any help y'all can give on this project. Jay

The flywheel end of the late A crank is different than your unstyled shaft. You can, however, use a A2360R shaft from an early styled tractor and gain 1/4" stroke over your unstyled shaft.

only thing different is there are threads for the adj. nut on the end of the shaft....cut the threads off in a lathe & you'll never know the difference or use a electric hacksaw & smooth with a grinder...I'm running a 37 with a 51 shaft in it with the 51 reduction gear...take care ...Kent

Thanks Drew. I was afraid of that. From what I've seen this must have been a weak spot on these early tractors, I've seen the same wear on a lot of the old crank shafts. Do you know anyone who does a good job at rebuilding them?

The spline OD is different between the late crank and the early one. I wonder how well your early flywheel is clamped on the late crankshaft?????

You could have used an early styled crank and not hacksawed on the late crank..........

here is an ebay number, 180418614534 that fits a 34 to 39 unstyled Model A JD that didnt sell for $150,seems like a pretty cheap to fix me.

if you will look there is not enough difference in size to affect the tightness...it will get tight & I have done it to more than one or I would not have posted the info...used it because all 8 of my parts tractors are late models...was just trying to help the man out...FYI this tractor also has main bearing housing from a "60", better bearing & just had to change to "60" oil line...take care ...Kent

I had the same problem on the crank with my 48 A and I had a well respected guy, based on the advice of many people, by the name of Mike williams in IA build up and respline the shaft. I have not completely put this back together, so I don't have any real experience with this yet, but I went with him on the advice of others.
