Crankless 2N

As some of you may know I am going to regress and install a WW2 mag on my 2N. Currently is has a 6 volt front mount distributor. Question is, did the '47 2N have an option to hand crank? If so, where may one find such a crank? Any help is appreciated.

Yes, they had the option.
Probably find the crank at a swap meet or on eBay.
I guess my question would be why you want to crank it.
It will start with a starter and run on the magneto.
No need to do all that work and risk breaking a thumb/wrist.

It should have a "ratchet" head on the front pulley bolt to engage a crank, UNLESS it"s been removed to install a hydraulic pump drive, as for a loader.

Hand cranks from MANY old tractors will interchange, or on can be made simply from a length of round stock, Simply bend it, and drill for a cross pin. I suspect some of the "N" tractors parts suppliers may have new ones, and there's a bunch of pretty much universal cranks on fleabay.

My 8n came with the crank... Stil have it. Have used it when battery got tired. If the timing is off you'll feel it. Still have shoulder issues from the last time I used it.... Emphasis on "last"

I would use the starter.... Even if you carry the battery out to start it.

That said... I love the concept of the magneto. And I'm keeping the crank... Great for setting points.

I have hand cranked my model A ford just to try it.Be careful that the timing is retarded enough if you use the crank....

I have used the hand cranks from Farmall Bs and also A/C B/C on the N series tractor in the past

If you have the correct pulley nut with the curved notches, then the jack handle from a mid to late '80s Mazda PU jack handle fits perfectly. HTH

my first car had a combination tire tool/ start engine tool, and i actually started it that way for the fun of it it when i was 14 yrs old. it was a 64 Renault, i was 14 and free, how did i get 53 yrs soo fast ?

Thanks for all the replies! Will check out all the sites mentioned. Should mention the reason I asked if it was an option is because the 2N is 170 miles away in northern Minnesota. Was lucky enough to find a mag since my last trip up north. Plan to use the crank on an emergency basis only. Thanks again for the help.

like said, lots of tractor makes interchange.
sometimes offbrand handcranks are too thick, then making one
out of 3/4" rod with a crosspin works well.
Cranks are very handy to have when working on an engine,
much better than trying to turn by the fan.
I sometimes use an old steering shaft out of a Wheel Horse garden tractor when doing engine work.
Cut it down, put in a crosspin, leave the steering wheel on
to turn the engine........

I grew up hand starting our tractors as they were always 6V and the electrics never worked.
Lots of naysaying about hand starting a tractor but it's safe if you do it right and very satifying to have an engine fire up literally in your hands.

I have a C with a hand crank.. nover thought to check to see if it fit my fords.

The C cranks pretty easily with a hand crank.

I have hand cranks form both and have use both on the N series in the past. That said I will not use them to start one but then I know all about he kick back that can happen and had a A/C B send me to the hospital due to a kick back and yes I was holding it correctly

my c kicked on me once when i first got it, but I usually snatch tothe side on each upstroke so at the end of the upstroke i've pulled the ears out of the nut so it don't catch.. but yeah.. not fun to see them kick back if you are in the handle's path.

Ya I got lucky and all it did was sprain it and had to wear a brace for a couple months. It kicked back on me and then the handle went a full back spin and got me on the back of the wrist

That is one reason I have leaned the system used on the old JD tractors are by far better then the hand crank set up. At least it can not kick back and get you you just loose your grip and it slips though your fingers. Or is that threw ??

I bought one from link_disallowed in Coushatta LA several yrs. ago that worked great, like old said, they work on the Ns and small Farmalls, same crank sold for both apps.
