Crankshaft Snapped

So the 860 turned off on me and long story short I dropped the oil pan and the crankshaft snapped at the 1st bearing journal. I am faced with only a couple options at this point obviously, sell it or repair it.

Before it gets sold, does anyone have a 172 rotating assembly, complete motor, or know of another option?

I was using a 5ft bush hog. I went to turn around in 1st gear running low rpms. Then, the tractor stopped like it stalled almost. I tried to start it back up and the starter kept engaging but the motor didn't turn over. I pulled the oil pan and this is what I found. I have no clue what caused it but now im not sure what to do except sell it unless I can find a motor for it.

Some J-B Weld and it'll be as good as new. NOT!

Similar thing happened to me in 1968. I'd purchased a new FJ-40 Toyota Landcruiser off the dealers showroom floor in June of '67 ; and just over Time & Mileage on the Warranty the Crankshaft let loose - in the middle of the Hollyood Freeway during Rush Hour traffic. Inline 6 cyl. engine, #5 Piston went through the side of the block under the Exhaust Manifold. Pulled the Rocker Cover, it had swallowed the Valves & Pushrods on #5, all the other Pushrods were bent like wet spaghetti. Upon teardown, the Crank was in SEVEN pieces ( VOIDS in the casting from the factory ). Ended up having to get an entire new engine. :>(

Later 172 diesel engines, after serial number 102356, used a crankshaft balancer. The purpose of the balancer is to smooth out engine harmonics, not only to please the operator, but also to help reduce torsional vibrations to the crank. It is these torsional vibrations that broke your crank.

Where are you located? I am in West TN. Have a 172 complete with a hole in the block caused be a Tee post (long story). email is open..

Yeah the shear bolt was in place and the interesting thing is I wasn't even going over anything at the time. My pto was spinning the blades but that's it.

Hi Neighbor! I will let you know if I see any parts tractors in our area that will work for your engine. I've generally had better luck with experienced parts than the new replacement stuff. Everything I have on-hand is for N-Tractors, and I'm starting to build a supply of stuff for my 3000.

So I have decided to keep my tractor, just need a running motor. Does anyone happen to have one that isn't too far from VA? Or that could freight it? If so PLEASE let me know by email. For some reason my emails have difficulty going through. It can be found at my profile page.

Thanks everyone.

Does anyone know if Farmall crankshaft breakage was or is as common as they seem to be with ford?

Thanks,
T
