Crossed generator wires

Looking at 51 8N sidemount with original 6 Volt Positive ground system. High ammeter reading at high RPM. May not know full details and tractor not close. The generator wires A and F were switched. Did this kill the regulator? Read the manual page 51 on field grounded in generator but would like ideas befor going to check it. All regulator terminals may have been shorted in attempt to polarize. my guess. When seated on tractor is the inboard or outboard terminal on generator the field? Thanks Steve

quit guessing and start looking.

1, if all terminals were common at one point.. then the reg could very well be fried.

the post on the housing that has an insulating grommet is the field.. the other post is pressed right into the metal.

Generator wires were crossed. Traced and disconnected everything was bright and put it together. Ran a few tests and everything seems ok now. Discharged battery by running lights for a time as it read a high charge to begin with. Ammeter wires may have been a bit loose. Might have been backwards and got confused? Seems to work properly now and thanks for the help. Steve

good. you got lucky mind you. the genny's are pretty fault tolerant.. but the vregs aren't

have fun.
