left wheel brake was not holding on older cub: about 1950 model. tore tractor down. bolt in brake wheel was broken. replaced it and it held fine for a few weeks. failed again. tore back down, bolt was loose. cleaned it up, put some lock tite on bolt. held for a few weeks and failed again. any suggestions?

the woodruff key keeps the drum from turning on the shaft. there is a bolt and locking nut that holds the drum in position, on the shaft. thinking about a small spot weld. sigh

I see a 5/16" 18 bolt/nut in the parts list. Using a grade 8 bolt or socket head cap screw with fine thread and locktite would be a good option. If the drum is loose on the shaft, it will be a problem and fail again. if the woodruff key is loose in its pocket and way, again it will fail. Jim

The hole in the drum is threaded, mandating use of whatever thread the hole has. The original printed parts catalogs just called it a lock screw. I don't know where the online list (that JAN linked to) got the capscrew and 3/8 from. Some of the IH parts didn't translate well when they went online.

TM Tractor has the right thing.

It should be a cup pointed setscrew with a locknut. The setscrew goes in directly on top of the woodruff key. I suggest a new setscrew and a new key. Then tighten the ^%$& out of it. If the shaft or center hole of the drum are worn, you will probably have the problem again.

Slide the drum off and see if the hole in it is "wallered" out. If so, it will keep coming loose till you get a new drum. Like wise with the shaft being worn.

I know it is a diagram from CaseIH. What I don't know is how that diagram ended up saying it is a 3/8 capscrew.
