Will someone tell me where the fill plug is on the hydrostatic transmission, I have a new filter and the correct oil. I think I read that IH didn't really plan on much service for this unit????Thanks

They don't require much service, but I also change the Hydrostat's oil & filter every few years.

On the rear of the differential, there is a flat plate with 8 or 9 cap screws holding it on. To change oil, take off that plate and it runs out. Have a pan under it to catch it. I also like to have a new gasket handy. Use some clean rags and wipe the oil out of the bottom of the differential that doesn't drain on it's own.

Put the cover back on, with a new gasket, and the fill is a plug in that flat plate, about 1/3 of the way down from the top. It helps to have a funnel with a long, flexible spout. You will need about 7 quarts.

The fill plug is on the back of the tractor above the fixed hitch. Fill it until it runs out. I park my cubs with the front end pointed down hill to get a little extra in them.

If this is the first time the transmission is being serviced in a long (or unknown) amount of time I would recommend removing the inspection plate and draining all the oil and replacing it. On the older hydrostats it is recommended to do this every year (?) or two. The manual for my 1450 only says to replace the filter on an annual basis and refill as needed.

Maybe by the late 1970s they thought HYTRAN had gotten good enough that changing it on a regular basis wasn't needed.
