Cub Cadet LT1050 Hydro Problem

My brother was using our dad's cub cadet LT1050 riding mower. He said it made a clunking noise then a few weeks later it quit moving while he was mowing. The belt is on but it won't move. Do any of you have experience with these mowers? What may have broken inside? I know it's made by MTD. Dad bought a new one of the same model, not sure why. I'm thinking of taking the old one and tear into the transmission to see if it's repairable. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks.

The hydro pump and control set on the side of the trans in this tractor. It is connected to the gear part of the trans by very fine splined shafts. The connectors between them are made of pot metal and strip out. You can buy the new two piece connectors and install them and should be good to go. Pretty easy actually.
