Cub Cadet not charging

Kohler Magnum 18 Hp M18S Last summer it started showing negative amps when first starting but then would show a charge after a few minutes of running but this year it isn't charging at all. This is on a Cub Cadet 1811 with 2400 hrs. any suggestions as to what to look for. Also on a second note it seems to be loosing reverse some times it will go 3 or 4 feet then stop and I have to go back and forth between forward and reverse several times to get it to go but it will have no power and won't back up a slight hill. Forward seems ok and the 3 pt hitch has plenty of lift. I changed the Hydraulic filter and and refilled what was lost with Cub Cadet brand fluid and the fluid looks clean. It has always been a great running tractor and has given me no trouble until now. Any help would be appreciated Thanks.

As to the charging problem, below is a link to the factory ENGINE service manual, electrical is in Section 8.

This will walk you through checking out the charging coils and regulator/rectifier to be sure they are producing charging current.

If that part checks out, the issue is somewhere between the rectifier/regulator and the battery.

Some same circuits are shown, likely similar to what is on your tractor.

Here's a link to a schematic for your 1811.

I believe what they call "alternator" on the diagram is a representation of the charging coils and the rectifier/regulator showing just the output, (as previously discussed the engine manual details the other parts).

Note that the charging current passes through the ignition switch, a corroded or burned connection there, or a failed switch can cause a "no charge" condition, but the PTO clutch and oil light wouldn't work, in that scenario.

Thanks wore out, after reading your reply I realized that the PTO stopped working at about the same time but I never thought to mention that so I just went out and checked to see if the oil light would work and it doesn't work so I looked behind the dash and the back of the ignition switch is corroded bad especially on one terminal that looks like it has 3 wires on it. Well I ordered a new switch $19.00 with shipping I will keep my fingers crossed and will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again, now I hope someone will have an easy fix for the Hydro Trans.

Take a close look at the connector, if the switch is in tough shape it may be, as well, and will cause a new switch to fail.

I am working on a DEERE 314 and both the switch and connector were in bad shape, I'm replacing it with one like the photo, some of the mower parts jobbers have them, I recently bought a couple off of ebay.

I wondered after I said that, worked on way to many units over years can not keep them all in my head anymore. check linkage and did this just start up or been gradual thing. does it make noise when you try to move. I am sure that there is also a tow release has it got moved.

Find the Rectifier.
Loosen or remove one of the mounting screws.
Run a wire from the screw to a goog ground on the frame.
Start the engine. If the Amp meter pegs to the Pos side. Good.

You can come back later and thank me for saving you a wad of cash and work..lol

No tow release that I know of on this I wish there was, I could have used it a few times over the years. No noise and yes it started acting up at the end of the mowing season last year.
