God forbid we give a guy realistic expectations I guess. It's not about "hating" it's about making sure people understand that they are YESTERDAY'S TRACTORS. Not something brand new that's going to zip around mowing knee-deep grass at 7MPH. Not something that is necessarily going to be able to perform the job it's equipped to do, due to age and wear and tear.

You may luck out and get a gem for your $1500. You are also just as likely to end up with a terd. Keep expectations low and hopes high.

Oh and the antique tractor hobby isn't dying because someone is "hating" on a tractor. If anything giving people an unrealistic idea of what old tractors are about is more of a turn-off.

In REALITY, the "farm kids" that grew up on these tractors are LITERALLY dying off. There are exponentially fewer "farm kids" in each subsequent generation that followed, and each generation has its own era of "antique tractors" that interest them.

Kevin, I once worked on a Cub with a 60" deck that had a one way clutch built into the pulley on the pto shaft. I have no idea where it came from, who made it etc. It did help with the starting, stopping and shifting. I wouldn't know where to start looking for a pulley like that now days either.

(quoted from post at 17:36:29 07/27/23) Cool aid??. What ever....

I am 74 years and have owned cubs all my adult life, (had 37 at one time) and only have 9 now so i guess I am still in the Cool aid class. I have used on to mow 17 acers of hay for the last several years. A also rake with one) I enjoy it because I am not in the hurry of the world and enjoy life. They are great little tractors. I don't need people to tell me the pro and cons, been there done that. To each his own.

Ran one of the original (tractor Cub not lawn mower Cub...yeah I know not much different under the sheet metal 'cept the starter/generator, but the looks! LOL) with a 60 belly mower for years as a kid, the blades on a finish mower will never cause the tractor to get pushed as they aren't heavy and don't depend upon centrifugal force like a rotary cutter. $1500 for a decent Cub is a good price, they are easy for a guy with a Ford Ranger and a single axle trailer to move around and show or whatever he wants to do so that value will always stay up a bit more than some of the bigger tractors. That all said, although I wouldn't kick a Cub out of my shed if one dropped on me, that value that I mentioned is what keeps me from getting one. For the same or less money you can get a Super C with Fast Hitch that will do anything a Cub will on the low end and everything a straight H will on the upper end, and do all in a handier manner (I stipulate that the H will hold back more weight coming down a hill by a slight margin).
A Cub can do what a Cub was made to do, some people like to romanticize them like they are The Little Engine That Could or something, but in reality they are just doing what they were made to do, no more no less. As many uses as I find for all my Oldies...if I can't take them to an antique pull and move the sled with no weight transferred, I am not gonna spend much time or money on the tractor. I almost never sell a tractor or a gun once I own it, but I sent a MM R down the road for just that reason. People make fun of Cubs, but they were a useful and important part of the IH lineup. I think the reason people scoff at them so much is because some tend to make them out to be more than they really are. A couple for instances; I have run the baler with a gear tagged behind with My Ford Ns, The Super C, The Deere MT, 420, and B, So If the Super M, the Super H, the JD 70 and A, all broke down together I know I could still bale, where I couldn't with a Cub. I also know I can gook any of the above to at least the 5' hog and get that done if needed.

My neighbor has a very nice mostly original '40 something Cub that he uses to plow snow and pull a roller with, and it does both very well provided he has the rear tires loaded, double ring field chains on, and he plows every 5-6. The ballast plays hell with the lawn when rolling sometimes. The tractor is so nice that I would probably have to make that purchase if he ever parts with it. His in laws purchased it new from the local IH dealer and as far as he or I know it's never spent a night outside. That said I don't have much I could put it to work doing except dragging the garden or I have an old IH 35 rake I could get up and running with out too much effort I suppose I could use,,,but probably a trailer with some seats for parade duty would be the most use
