Cub steering wobble

Hey guys -

Subject: 1952 Cub

Tractor has the proverbial death wobble on a bumpy road. Tie rods are tight on both ends. Spindle bearings have no noticeable movement. Tiller appears tight on the quadrant shaft sticking out of the steering gear box. Turning the steering wheel, that quadrant shaft travels up & down about 1/8. Is there an adjustment in the gear box to take this thrust motion, or is it just plumb wore out?

Appreciate your wisdom.....

Team -

I removed the front axle so I could get access to the linkage under the gear box. The clamp on the quadrant arm was tight, but there was noticable vertical movement to the shaft. After fighting to remove the cotter pin, I removed the castle nut and checked things over. I then re-assembled things and snugged up the quadrant arm so there was only the slightest amount of vertical movement. Re-assembled everything and took it out for a drive. Death wobble appears to be cleared up now.

Thought I'd pass on my learnings....
