Cultivators

I have picked up a 1948 Farmall Super AV. It came with a single row cultivator and a plow. My question is the cultivators sit at 2 different hieghts. I have adjusted the one sitting low as high as the adjustments will allow. When I lift them with the hydraulic lift the left side raises a good 10 or 12 inches. The right side lifts only about 4 inches at the most. What is out of wack? How do I remedy it.

Is that left side under the oil pan? If so you don't want it to come up and put a hole in the pan. That is the way it is designed.

The left side may have a shorter lift arm to lift the way you are describing.

Do you have Super AV mounting frames on both sides or is one of them from a Super A?

Richard: I don't have any experience with V or high crop cultivators, however I have owned 6 sets of the standard clearence and on those both left and right lift frames do lift the same height.

Jim must have your answer, you have mixed lift frames. I saw this problem once on a regular SA, someone toggled up a Cub frame on left side. Although left and right lift frames look quite different they do have one thing in common. The distance between pivot points are the same on both sides.

On Gary's assumption re: the oil pan, one has to be careful when installing tool bars and ground working tools, to make sure these don't strike the oil pan when cultivators are in raised position. This is also true of any other part of the tractor. I had a guy call me one day, said if he was not using hydraulics or cultivators, still on the tractor, the hydraulics got hot, while running the tractor. Turns out he had a ground working tool mounted in such a way it hit clutch housing when cultivators were in raised position. This caused the hydraulics to stay on demand.
