Custom Carb (pics)

I put this together for a local lady. I even tried to talk her
out of it, $$, but now that it's done I kind of like it.
There is no paint, clearcoat, wax or anything on it.
It is just buffed cast and brass installed as directed.
She intends on waxing it to keep it from corroding.
We'll see how that works. It will be at the local shows.

I always spray my carbs with clear acrylic after rebuild.

The clear acrylic turns the shiny bare metal a light brown that looks similar to the patina on a slightly used carb and prevents rust.

Wax will work til it gets a drop of gas on it. Clear will work for a while but it won't be as shiny as it is now.

I have never figgerd out why Y'all spend so much time put'n a cheap arse rattle can paint job on'em... It not going to rust away...

As I said, this one wasn't painted, but I can assure you they
do rust Hobo. Rust away? Not if they're being used regularly.

If you're building them to last through usage [i:6ede69e53d]and[/i:6ede69e53d] storage too,
you do things a bit differently than you would if you were just
slapping it together to run for the summer and hoping to have
a repeat customer the next spring.

There are a lot of folks needing carbs rebuilt though, so feel
free to let them know where to send them if you're willing.

Water got in that carb paint is not the issue...

Carb rebuilding is below my pay grade you can have them all...
If I did build one its not get'n paint just to make it eye candy...

"Carb rebuilding is below my pay grade you can have them all..."

Ya, I thought you'd pass on that one. ;)
It's not like you (or I) will make any money at it.
It just keeps old tractors running. Sentimental fool that I am. :)

Looks great Royse. Never foolish if it is something that you like doing.

What finish is left that you have not tried .... porcelainization!

Thanks greywolf, haven't tried porcelain but that would
be one tough finish!
I thought about powder coating them, but I'm not convinced
that would work out well. Maybe I'll try it on one of mine.

Powder is not any better than paint. Only reason it seems to be popular is because it is more environmentally friendly.

OK, I've seen all kinds of nice carbs on here in many different finishes, but what color were they originally? Were they painted?

To my understanding, yes. Even the exhaust manifold was painted red.
I think after all the red was sprayed then the radiator & shroud, hood, doglegs & grill were installed.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. :-)

"I never had one dodat what am I doing wrong..."

Bare metal rusts. Carbs, roll bars, flat stock, whatever.
Even brake drums and rotors come coated in oil and wrapped.
Didn't you paint your 'bota brush guard so it wouldn't rust?

"The paint is pop'N off my bad cheap rattle can paint..."

Sometimes that's cheap paint, but most times it's due to
a lack of proper prep work and/or primer.
I'm fairly sure I'm preaching to the choir here though.
For that brush guard with no fuel exposure maybe powder coat?

Cheap rattle can primer, I did metal prep it with cheap metal prep to... If the out side of that carb has surface rust dust I would figger the inside would also... Its still not going to rust away...

I have one sitting out under a shed maybe 7/8 years it does not get run much maybe I will take a look to see if the carb is still there and not rusted off.. My grandpa's JD is in front of it it has a MS with no paint also, Even from the factory I don't think they got much paint on the back side if any at all..

If you just have to paint them up the price to take care of the time and contamination it causes in yer cleaner...

A Guy I know is a believer on painting the inside with POR-15 he is into Case's those run MS's big as yer head... I had to stop and go look at my pile of MS carbs that were cleaned years ago to make sure they had not rusted away they are still there :D
I had got into the habit of hitting them with purple stuff after I cleaned the carb soak of of them the PS seams to take the cleaner stink off of'em and acts as a metal prep...
