Customers Consignment Sale Bad Luck

This is a very recent purchase of a good customer. What he had hoped was a good deal, certainly is not. Having used it for less than a 100 hours a bad knock developed, really bad. After pan removal I find a con rod brg and crank journal trashed. That is piles of metal shavings laying in the pan. I also seen evidence of coolant in the crankcase for a long period of time. Also after checking air filters neither was fastened down, just setting in housing leaking air through the centers. Notice the build date on the inner filter, yes 86. I have had several other bad experiences with tractor purchases on consignment sales. We will save them for another time. Rod.

I can over haul one cheaper, even doing a in line bore and crank
I have changed a couple that had far more issues with the reman long blocks, think the last one was 8000 plus core

I never priced one, but was surprised to see they were supporting them. I almost seem to think I saw 451's listed.
BTW, got a surprise yesterday when a customer called & asked if we could supply the Variable Speed Pulley Belt for a 1665 Combine. A real CASE, not the POS CASE-IH. Anyways, some years back, I was told that CASE no longer furnished it, but on a whim I checked yesterday & it was available. I have discovered that same thing with some other parts that CASE obsoleted, then re-stocked. Go figure.

We still have a Short block for a 730=267 Diesel /Was one that was ordered & was the Wrong one for a tractor the dealer was fixing & they kept for a ??? need that never happened! they were Cleaning out alot of older parts when we found it =didnt need but bought it any way & still never used it.

Hi John, this is a 1370. He has decided to have me overhaul it. Luckily the block is in good shape. Rod.

rod; looks like it chewed up bearings pretty badly. I am doing a 1570 right now and ordered my valve grind set from my case dealer last week. I picked the gaskets up yesterday and about fainted when they gave me the bill of $828.00 . they said they now have to order every piece in the kit separately and that is what it comes to. I must say I am not going to order any more sets from case. I have seen on here in the past that you and others have had bad luck with some aftermarket gaskets and was wondering which ones to buy from now on. I have many case's and do my own work on them. thanks; john

John that price seems way out of line to me. There are a couple usa built kits available that are good for less than $300.

Thanks for info, we needed a crank and got a nice used std from local salvage. They charged me $1000. Said their retail is $1200. Hope that info helps you sell yours. Rod

I can't IMAGINE bringing a used machine onto the place and not checking it over and servicing it before putting it to use.

Whatever you can say for the PO, the current one ain't much to brag about if he worked it without checking the air filter, and changing the oil!

An oil change may well have shown metal filings while there was perhaps time to stop payment on the check or otherwise cancel the deal.

Not to mention a loose air filter NOT being a good harbinger of things to come.

Bob, You are correct I can not imagine them not checking the tractor over better. That is usually the first thing you do when getting a different unit. Rod.

ROD; THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY. ARE FEL-PRO AND VICTOR REINZ STILL GOOD ONES TO GO WITH OR DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER PREFERENCE.SO MANY COMPANIES ARE CUTTING CORNERS AND HAVING THEIR GOODS MADE OVERSEAS BY INFERIOR COMPANIES I AM NOT SURE WHO TO TRUST ANYMORE AND WE SURE DON;T WANT TO HAVE TO TEAR THE MOTOR DOWN A SECOND TIME BECAUSE OF INFERIOR HEAD GASKETS. I APPRECIATE YOUR KNOWLEGABLE OPINION. THANKS AGAIN . JOHN THIERER

Very sad news, I know here a guy bought a painted up 4440, with a loader, and we had it in the shop, with motor troubles, but the back end had lots of troubles too. He took it home with the worn out rear end. So my guess this one will go on the market again, and some poor soul with get it.

Thanks, sold mine to someone on this board. NIB S&W 357 Magnum stainless 6" barrel should be here Monday on the trade.

Consignment sales are one of the places where I feel better buying the broken ones with disclosed issues. Bought a 1070 with water in the oil a couple years back. It has been a great tractor after I put in the sleeve kit. The gas 870 I bought for parts to get my granddads 770 back together was a great value too(stuck engine with spun bearing). 1370 that with a blown head gasket... seems healthy, been using it to help the 1150 with the tile plow.

Never a shortage of broken and abused DBs at consignment sales either. Usually hydraulic issues that are easily fixed. Have an NICE 1194 LCG in the shop now that I bought with "transmission trouble", that just needed a clutch disc and a battery.
