Cut some hay yesterday

Finally got a chance to cut some hay yesterday. The hay was about prime, but was the tallest, thickest hay I've ever cut. I originally planted alfalfa, but last year it was thin, so I planted in some clover hoping to get a better crop. Well this year it all grew, plus a thick stand of grass too. It was so thick and tall it went down. The grass was as tall as the tractor tires where t stood and the alfalfa was as tall as the haybine. The clover was just shorter than that. All laying down and tangled. Some of the stubble is 12-18" long from laying so flat.

The hay is so wet and the ground is so wet it's going to take a long time to dry. Looks like some rain on Tuesday, hopefully I can get it baled by then.

That is some pretty stuff.....I'd like to have about 50 bales.

Jon, looks like some really nice hay. Hope it drys before it rains. Will look forward to see how the bale wagon works out for you.

Those haybines or others that windrow the hay as being cut sure would seem to slow the drying?

That's layed out in a swath rather than windrows.

These dry really fast when spread wide like that. They do dry slower when the row is narrowed.

Nice. I'm in Nicollet County and we have rain forcast for tonight and tomorrow morning. I have 300 grass I will bale this afternoon but the 300 alfalfa won't be ready until tomorrow. Yikes.

I doubt it worked the tractor that much. Haybines don't take a lot of power.

Disc mowers are a different story though.

I agree, friend used a '51 JD A for many yrs. pulling a NH 9' haybine doing custom baling.

I have a JD 1207. When first had it I tried it on my A but the hydraulics would not lift it. Ended up putting an adapter for a remote line on the Ford 2000. Standard PTO but it worked OK and I could run in 3rd. True, not too much power required.

Here in the Northeast pretty much everyone mows into a narrow swath most of the time to speed up drying.

I also used a JD A on a 9' New Holland for many years.

Jon you might want to get a hay tedder they will spread hay and get hay off the ground so air and sun can get to it good to see you have wide front on the case nothing bit my but more than running over hay just cut off last round

It was because of stands of hay like this , that I started doing silage bales. June weather can be so unpredictable, and the hay is so lush, I can be really hard to make dry hay. Nice pictures
