Cut some tall hay

Cut some more hay yesterday. I'm sure getting tired of fighting this tall, thick hay. Lol. Going to be nice to have a lot to sell tho. Most of what I cut yesterday wasn't excessively tall, but this was.

Was well over 6' tall.

I tried to cut it up a bit, but then the rows were so tall they would bunch under the shield on the haybine.

The outside round where I drove on it was almost impossible to cut. The grass would get into the rollers before it cut in the tracks and the rollers were smoking, so I had to cut over the tracks and leave them to get it cut. I have another small piece like this that is even taller, not sure how I will get that cut.

Reed canary grass cuts great with a haybine, until it gets that tall. Then its a pain. I've had it wrap around the front bar while at the same time being pulled through the rollers, bent the bar into a V. Feed value is also poor once it gets that big, but it's usually in wet ground so its tough to get cut when it really needs it.

My Grand dad and I hand seeded timothy (with hand cranked cyclone spreaders) and had them adjusted a bit open. The soil conditions were perfect, moisture perfect, and germination near 100%. the stand was as tall as a Super H and was purple bloom stage. The SH was in low gear wide open to lay it down and near binding up the mower even with good sections and ledger plates. The swath was 8 inches thick and had to be raked into 2 windrows to be accepted by the NH baler. That will make nice hay. Jim

Once it's bailed you won't be complaining much. Nice looking hay. steve

That's where a disc mower really shines. Either just a straight disc mower or disc mower with flails would go threw that like a hot knife threw butter. In the past I have had a Heston 1014 hydro swing with steel rolls and then moved up to a 499 NH hydro swing with rubber rolls and either one was a pain in the rear when the grass was tall and thick. Reel wrap, roller wrap, roller wrap sometimes so bad it pull the grass by the roots, just a nightmare. Went to a Deere 730 MoCo, hydra swing and could cut that crap all day, with out any issues. Even though it was a narrower machine you could still cut the same fields in half the time, and you could cut whether there was dew or not. The past few weeks I've been cutting a lot down with just NH 616 disc for some of the neighbors that are having nightmares with their older sickle machines, like PT-10's, 479/489 even 1465's. It's surprising how fast it dries down without a conditioning, but then again it's so mature it's darn near dry just standing there.

I have 8 acres of that waiting for me, but it’s still in 6 inches of water.

I use a 3pt disc mower, can tell it’s working on that stuff. I have difficulty raking it, wheel rake is useless and NH side rake often skids. I’ve sometimes just round baled it as it lays flat, then come back and rake the misses, which still makes a big windrow in a hurry.

Not the best hay, but gives the cattle something to burn through in a Minnesota winter. Second cutting is often pretty nice, short and leafy.

Baling can be tough too because even when you try to ease into a big place in the windrow the baler can already have a hold of what is six feet ahead of it.
