cylinder wear

I have a std bore block for a unstyled A that has .005 thousands wear can i still use it as a std bore or should i get it bored and to what size should i bore it if needed

.005" is not worn bad at all for one of these. You could easily go up to .010" and I doubt you could tell the difference between it and a freash bored out one.
I take it that this is the MAX. over you can measure and it should only be in the upper side of the top of the ring travel.
I'd sure use it.
These are slow running engines with low compression and alot of thick piston rings and as such do not require to be tight. This is where alot of people get into trouble with all these automotive machine shops doing the work. They think everything is the same as a race car engine .

.005 is only .002.5 on a side. The true test would be to get it running and check the compression. I doubt if you've lost any....rw

Just be sure when you are measuring it, that you measure top, middle, bottom, and then review the measurements to determine total taper, not just size at one point. If it is evenly worn, you have a good chance of just honing it correctly to re-establish a good cross-hatch pattern for break-in, but an excessively tapered cylinder is often overlooked until you have problems with excessive oil consumption down the road.

A decent dial-indicator bore gauge is pretty cheap if you ever plan on working on more than one block.

Dave,
Another easy way is to install a new ring in the bore and measure the ring gap. If I remember correctly it suppose to be like 3to5 thousands per inch of bore. You can check that in the IT service book. Of course you will need to have a new ring and be able to return it if you need to bore and go bigger. But these old babies are pretty forgiving. A little big doesn't usually cause a problem.
