D 15 series II engine question

I own an AC forklift with a D15 Series II (160 cu. in.) engine. The keepers on the third cylinder exhaust valve let go. We got new keepers and got the valve working again. Now the third cylinder has zero compression. We are planning on removing the head after Christmas. Does anyone have experience with this problem? Did this engine have a problem?

Keepers falling out of place and dropped valves can and have happened to most engine brands and sizes for decades. That engine is not KNOWN for that problem but it can happen. I'll bet you need a piston too.

The only unique characteristic I have experienced with that engine (in tractors and a forklift) is that it's relatively high compression, as you can occasionally get a knock. Mine blew the head gasket between two cylinders (towing a pickup and trailer in greasy conditions). I was surprised to find the head gasket was all fiber- no obvious fire (metal) rings around each cylinder. Fortunately the new gasket did have fire rings. I debated how much to do with this engine with the head off. It gets little light use anymore (running a sickle bar mower). I put a flat edge on the head and block, checked liner protrusion, etc. The coolant was very rusty. I flushed the head with water, and while doing that filled it with water checking the valves. No leaks, so I put it back together. I may have removed valves. I don't honestly remember. It works fine now.
Your unusual failure (at least in my experience) warrants a good tear down and inspection of components.

This morning, we got the head off. The problem is just a bent valve. The piston has a small ding, but in good shape.

The serial number on the block is17850-R. Can anyone tell me the year it was cast? I am fairly certain it is a D-15 Series II engine. 160 is stamped on the block. I am certain that is the cubic inches of the engine.

Thanks for any help.

That's all a series 2 had was the G-160. The early D-15's were the G-149. Serial number of the block means little for dates. What is the chassis s/n? If the chassis is say within a thousand or so of early 1966 numbers, the block probably was cast in 1965, but the engine may not have been assembled and running until 1966. Blocks had to "cure" for so many days or weeks before they were finish machined and then assembled into a complete engine.

Must be a late one.
My D15 is #15928, making it a 1963. Interestingly, that's just 1000 short of the 1964 starting serial number- 16928!
The engine is 160-3880-R
