D-17 Brake Job

I need to reline the brakes on my early serial # D-17, with external shoes. My official AC repair manual doesn't address brakes at all, and my I&T manual is pretty brief. I have everything loose, per the manual, but the shoes won't come out. I think the problem is the brake rods are still connected to the yokes, but the manual doesn't say anything about disconnecting the brake rods, and I can't figure out how to do it. Can anybody help me out?

The brake rods are threaded into the square swival on the brake shoe bracket, just turn the rods out. if you have not already done so remove the brake shoe holding pin, then the shoes will come out the top of the houseing.

Hi Tim,

Maybe you have only the Operator"s Manual and not the Service Manual?
I copied the pages from my Service Manual.
I did my D-17 last year and was fortunate in that the big pins on the bottom came out without a problem.

BTW, that measurement of the brake rod is quite critical in order to get the most leverage and most effective braking.
Jacking the wheels and turning them as you make the brake adjustment is the only way to do it right.
Do not adjust them too tight......the brakes may drag when they build just a little heat and in some cases you will not be able to set the parking brake cam. I know because I made that mistake once on my WD and had to remove the seat and do it all over again. Hope this is helpful and good luck.

that anckor pin at the bottom of the housing is a real ##%&*$# 2 get out I spent about 6 hours n then ended up torching them out a little at a time while driving them in with an air hammer

Thanks for the help, guys; wd45man had the answer I was looking for. I didn't get that the brake rod screws into the toggle pin. Once I got the rods out the shoes came out easily. I lucked out on the pins that hold the shoes together, they came right out; I think each side leaks a little gear oil, they were bright and shiny. Brian, thanks for the reprint, the AC D-17 service manual that I have has no section on brakes at all, my I&T manual has your second picture and fewer instructions.
