D-17 exhaust problem.

It seems I cannot find a exhaust pipe that will fit tight enough to keep water out of the manifold and then in turn cause a problem with ti trying to hyd lock on me. I started it not long ago as in around 5 and while I could get it to turn over it did not want to do so as it should have. First off the starter button did not work so had to jump from the battery to the solenoid an it did start and had water coming out the exhaust. It died soon after due to the gas being turned off LOL. But any how the exhaust pipe is the problem. What diameter should the pipe be. This is a early series 1 D-17

I think an early series 1 is the same 2 bolt muffler as a WD45 isn't it? My series 2 has a threaded manifold that a 1 1/2" pipe nipple threads into.

If you can't find a steel pipe the same size of the muffler pipe, have one a little bigger turned down, slip it in the manifold and weld it all the way around, then have the muffler pipe expanded to fit over it.

I found a piece of EMT that just fit in my WD manifold but the manifold wasn't threaded. If threaded can it be cleaned up with a tap. I know a pipe tap that big isn't easy to find or cheap if you have to buy it.

I plan to take it into my shop and then weld a short piece of pipe to the manifold. I'll run it till good and warm and then weld the pipe on and then start it back up. That way the manifold will be hot so should work sort of like putting it in an oven

I finally got a chance to check the parts book. Prior to 32001 the D17 used the same manifold and muffler as a WD45 with the 2 bolts holding the shielded muffler on. At 32001 they started using the 1 1/2" pipe nipple threaded into the manifold. I had a local shop tap mine for the threads. Casting broke, so he brazed the nipple in. Works great.

I tried to weld a piece of pipe in place yesterday but it did not hold like it should have. Maybe the 7014 rod I used did not like the cast iron manifold. I will fire it up again today so the manifold gets hot then try again but this time will use some cast iron rod I found when looking at what rod I had on hand

(quoted from post at 12:31:07 10/30/19) LOL shipping it would bankrupt me LOL

This is the Nelson muffler you need for an early D17. Bolts to the manifold and has the rain shield to keep water from running down into the manifold. We carry them for $135+ shipping
