D 17 thermostat housing

I have a series 1 d 17 1959 and i wondered was there any different housings used on the 17 engine? The previous owner used the slot head stove bolts or screws to fasten the two halves together when he replaced the thermostat and i have to replace it again.Mine fastens on the engine with two nuts. I am thinking of buying another housing already in two pieces for a back up in case this one gets burgered up trying to get the two screws out. thanks in advance, tim

There were different ones for the diesel engine but the gas engine used the same housing and cover on all four series. The housing fastens down with two nuts on studs and the cover bolts together. You could probably use regular bolts if your worried about the slotted ones.

I'm just worried about trying to get the old bolts out without screwing up and breaking off the bolts. Thanks again. deeply appreciate any and all answers.

If you get them out use Never Seez on the new ones.
Put the right size screw driver in the slot and give the screw driver some firm hits with a hammer. Vibration helps free rusted bolts.

A Dremel Tool is really a valuable tool for getting into some tight places..
I use one, with an adjustable chuck for using extremely small drill bits..
Much easier to drill those small holes and not break to drill bits..(#60-80)..
The Cut-Off wheel (up to about 2"dia.) will seriously cut any material..
If you install Stainless bolts, you should never have another problem with rust..!!

I was going to mention stainless steel bolts but I didn't want to get all the part time scientists on here writing term papers on galvanic corrosion. So since you mentioned it it's going to be your fault not mine if they do. LOL
