Cleaned carb gas tank put in new plugs
and points. Runs good at idle but when
you try running it wide open dies off
kinda pops a little. If you choke it dont
seem to help it run either. Before i
cleaned everything it would have to be
choked about 3/4 of the way to keep it
running. Thats why i went threw all that.

First thing to check is to make sure that you have ample fuel to the carb, next make sure the plug wires are good and solid copper. You probably didn't get all the passages in the carb clean, but the above things can mimic a lean condition, which is what popping thru the carb signifies. Might double check timing as well.

With the motor warmed up some..open it up to nearly FULL throttle and open the Main fuel metering screw...
IF you get Black smoke out the exhaust, it IS getting plenty fuel...
If NOT, you need to check it again...
The passage that supplies the Main Metering screw usually gets sediment in it but is easy to check..
New Points..??
Could be a questionable Condenser, or..some wear in the dist. bearings..
Might end up trying a couple different point gap settings to see if it improves..if it is getting plenty fuel..

Went threww carb again clener goes threw all ports with nothing blocking anything in the carb. Has new wires new plugs new points new rotor has good spark to all plugs. If u speed it up slow it will run bout 3/4 throttle. If u go any frther it hesitates nd the govener keeps going bck and forth while its trying to run tht wy. Getting plenty of fuel to the crb also. Just dont know wht else to try.

Check your compresion. I ground the coil wire and crank the engine and listen to even cranking (even compresion)first tho. Mabey intake valve train issue , flat cam? Just something else to think about.

Got her running changed a carb from one of my other D17 and she purs when shes wide open with that one. Guess the carb must be wore every port shots carb cleaner out from another hole when i cleaned it again so dont know why she wont run with that one. Now to find another carb for her so i can make some hay. Thanks for all the help well appreciated. Thanks again.

You did not say if you turn the "Load" Screw out, that you get Black smoke out the exhaust at higher throttle...
Does it..???
If not, you may be getting all the fuel in the world and still be LEAN because of the "LOAD" screw setting..

Ron..

Those carbs are SO simple, you should find whatever is restricting the fuel flow...
I would look at the point where the "LOAD Screw" needle Seats and see if there is some restriction there..
Look at the end of the Load Screw itself, for some deformation from being seated to tightly or a Burr that could restrict sufficient fuel-flow..
