D17 and chisel plowing

I own a D17 Series IV and I am thinking of buying a chisel plow. Can anyone tell me what size chisel plow I could easily pull? Thanks.

I tried a 7 shank on my D15. It pulled it but with no wheel weights or water in the tires they slipped a lot and even with the TB lever all the way back it was still constantly trying to pick the plow up. A D17 should handle a 5 shank no problem.

back in the late 60s Dad and I were at our local dealership getting parts and a guy came in and wanted to buy a chisel plow for his D17, and the owner of the dealership said"they don"t make them that small".

We pulled a 7 shank with sweeps with a WD45D (ballasted) in gumbo (heavy clay) when I was a kid. Not real fast, but it pulled it. I pull a nine shank with my D19TD about 11" deep now....makes her snort once in awhile. A D17 gas or diesel should pull a 7 shank if you have it weighted down.

I pull a 5 shank with sweeps at about 10-12 inches through nice topsoil with my WD. I couldnt pull it until May this year because of the wet spring we had in Michigan. Depending on your soil type a D17 shouldnt have problems pulling the same size at all. especially if your weighted and ballasted.
