D17 question

I just bought a 1961 D17 and I"m woundering if I have a problem with it or if it is normal, when the tractor is in neutral and the clutch pedal press down the tractor runs great, but if you leave it in neutral and release the clutch the engine sounds like it is trying to move the tractor, is this normal or is something hung up in the trans.? Thanks for any help.

Kelly - when you say the tractor is in neutral, do you mean the transmission gear shift is in neutral or the power director hand clutch is in neutral. IF you mean the hand clutch, it is NORMAL for the tractor to want to creep the tractor forward, esp. when the tractor is cold. When it fully warms up, it will creep less.

The power director compartment is also supposed to have trans/hydraulic fluid. Some have made the mistake of putting 80/90w gear lube in it which makes the creep MUCH worse. Let us know if this answers your question. Mike

sorry, forgot to mention the trans was in neutral and the power director was in high range. I'm sure I will have alot more questions about the tractor as I try to figure things out.

Well if the transmission is in neutral, it shouldn't want to move much compared to it being in gear & the PD in neutral. But if you are doing this when it's REALLY cold out the gear lube could be pretty thick and want to drag on the gears and shafts.

Another issue might be that the gear lube in the transmission hasn't been changed in a long time and it's become water-logged and you have some ice in the transmission if you are doing this when it's below freezing outside.

I'd start out by getting the tractor warmed up good, draining out the transmission/differential housing. Put the plug back in, dump a gallon diesel down, let it soak for say an hour, then pull the plug to drain out any more slug the diesel may have dissolved.

You can put trans/hydraulic fluid back in there instead of gear lube if you like and it will be fine. Mike

D-17 has the high/lower clutch set up that runs in oil and if /when cold yep you let the main clutch pedal up it will pull it down some because if the oil being cold. Pretty much the nature of the beast plus if you have it in any gear it will sort of try tp take off when in neutral in the power director

Thanks for the info guys, it probably has ice in the trans because the tractor sat outside for the past 4 years not being used and it had a torn boot around the shifter so I assume water has got inside. Also it has a 2 point hitch on it, what is the max weight those arm will lift?
