D17 series 1 hyd. Level

Lift arms UP on the tractor to check the hydraulic oil level. If the lift arms want settle down on their own, tie them up to the seat bracket with a twine string.

I understand the loader needs to be down. Most people don't understand the lift arms on those tractors should also be UP when checking the hydraulic oil level, especially when using a loader.

Thanks dr. That's kind of what I was
thinking the loader cyls are larger than
the rear lift cyls so more oil will be
needed. I was thinking reading dip stick
with loader raised maybe 2 ft.

Suit yourself. Raise the loader 1 inch off the ground would be more accurate sitting on level ground. If you overfill it, you'll know because it will vomit out what isn't needed.

When we had loaders on those tractors we would fill with oil by the book which is as Dr Allis advised, lift arms up, other cylinders collapsed. THEN IF the system would run out of oil before the loader was all the way up we would add a bit more oil. Some loaders have large cylinders incorrectly sized for the Allis system and you will not be able to balance the fluid levels so that the loader will go all the way up and not blow oil out when all the way down.

I don't know what the Freeman model 17 is, but hopefully it's the correct loader for the D17. Freeman made the OEM loader for the WD45 we had. Seems like the hyd. reservoir was overfilled by one quart with the addition of the loader.
