I have an Allis Chalmers D17 series 3 I just picked up relatively cheap because the owner said it needed a ring gear and didn’t want to mess with it.
I was able to pull start it and drove it home. When I got back I parked it in the shop and pulled the starter. To me looks like a new starter with a tag marked 4157N. I rolled the engine around to inspect the ring gear and it doesn’t look great but not the worst I’ve seen. I put the starter back on and tried to start it when I hear a terrible groan/low pitch growl when the starter is engaged. Went to remove the starter to bench test when I noticed it’s not completely flush against the bell housing. Thought maybe I messed something up installing it so didn’t think much of it.
With it off looking over the starter compared to photos online it looks like the right starter part number matches to a good number try to put it back in and noticed that I can’t push it far enough on the top side of the starter to be flush with the flywheel housing. Wiggle the starter and nothing. Installed the starter and Used a borescope and went up through the clutch adjustment hole and inspected to see if it was bottoming out against something. Found nothing inside causing this. Talked with guy I got it from about info on the starter and he said he had a local guy fix it and he said where he bought it from sent the wrong starter so he swapped nose cones that’s when he let him know the ring gear was bad. To me the nose cone doesn’t look used but who knows.
Anyone got an idea what I might have going on. Just order a new starter?
