I don't know all the changes that were made but the Series III and IV were the only ones to have decals to designate them.

Instrument, Dash, had serveral changes through the production years of the D17.
 
Slight correction- all D17 had live hydraulics, but the Series IV had independent hydraulics. Otherwise, very good list of details.
 
No D17's ever had live hydraulics from the factory. They are all driven from the drive shaft running through the torque tube. You step on the clutch and everything stops. The series 4 has the best system that used industry standard pressure and flow rates, but it too stops when the clutch is pressed. You have to use the power director to get independent pto and hydraulics just like a WD.
