d188 injector pump

I removed the injector pump from my 67 504 for cleaning and paint. I followed the manual's instructions for static timing setting the fan drive pulley at 2 degrees after top dead center. The line on the governor weight retainer was in line with the line on the cam ring as described but both line were not in the center of the timing hole as shown in the manuals, see attached photo. The engine was running OK prior to this. Does the position of the lines matter?

I've seen marks apart more than that, but when replacing it set it per the service manual says to. Best pull the TA lever back if tractor has one, then back up the crank pulley a bit. Then turn it clockwise to align the marks again, this is to remove any gear lash. If marks align OK you are done. If not adjust the pump by rotating the housing as needed and re-check again.

No need to worry that they are not in center. If it ran good
just put it back where it is. The mark on cam ring is dependent on
model of pump and advance mechanism. I personally always put the
plastic timing window on to check automatic advance after
installation.

Is this plastic cover still available?

Any diesel repair shop that works on Roosa Master pumps will have or can get you a plastic timing window. Last I priced it was like $16 , they didn't have one on hand but I found my long lost one. Not a good idea to leave it on permanently though but necessary to see if advance is working correctly. The shops use different methods but window is all you need and specs of course.
