DB/Case 1410 Purchase

Hello All!

I'm currently looking @ a DB 1410 with a blown engine. Owner, who claims he's the 2nd owner, tells me the tractor "lost oil and locked up". The tractor appears to be in great shape cosmetically and appears to be in her original dress, no refurb. Owner claims it has a new clutch, w/ new gears in the transmission and rear end.
My question is this, what would/could I be getting into with a rebuild? I'm not what you would call a mechanic, but i can follow directions and get things done. Would it simply be a rebuild kit, tear it down and put it back together? Will I need to bore cylinders, have the crank turned, replace crank bearings, rod bearings, whatever else? You tell me.
I can get the tractor for what I think is a decent price. < $2,000. Can I get it going for another grand?

I love DB tractors. I and one son-in-law, own 885's. Another son-in-law just bought a 1210, and my brother-in-law and nephew both own 990's. So, I'm very familiar with them.

If I'm biting off more than I think I am, please let me know.

Thanks!

If it locked up due to loss of oil, you could be looking at catascopic damage. I priced having a Case 251 overhauled and was up around 4000 dollars and it is a running tractor. So I doubt 1000 dollars would do much more than get the gaskets and seals. I could be way way off here but thats my initial thoughts. But it sounds like you would really like to have that tractor, money is earned to be spent. gobble

Did it knock any new holes in the block? I would budget for replacing or at a minimum refurbishing the crankshaft, rods and camshaft plus a rebuild kit (several $1,000 alone). Add up the cost of parts and your labor before making a commitment. Also check the price of a complete used engine and the price of a field ready tractor. A field ready tractor might be the best value unless you are looking for a hobby project or already have a running engine to swap in.

This one sounds like it is a parts tractor.

I am not certain what is meant by a "blown engine". Around here, from what you described, I doubt the seller could get much more than $1000 for that tractor. A few years ago, I gave $1500 for a DB1210 with a spun connecting rod bearing. The deal included the Case 65 loader that was on it. Making an allowance for the loader, I still felt I paid too much for it. Maybe I'm cheap, but it was not cheap to get the crankshaft ground, get the head reconditioned and purchase rings, bearings, gaskets etc - not to mention the labor (which may be a labor of love - Lol). The value of the DB you are looking at might best be gauged by the value of the back tires plus the scrap value of the remainder of the tractor. Offer him $1000

If it seized you should check on availability and cost for a crank so you know the worst case for cost. You may well be able to turn yours, but maybe not. Other than that an over haul kit, head work and injection work will be the costs. You can check all that with local shops. I wouldn't be surprised at $4-6000.00 on parts cost when your done with all that. But where will you get a rebuilt tractor for $6-8000 that you know is good throughout?

You may want to take off the starter and use a crow bar to see if the engine will spin over. Mark the gear and see if you can spin it all around until you come back to your mark.

A good friend of mine has a 1410 that runs good but is kinda ragged that he doesen't use anymore, his dad bought it new, if interested call Tim at 715-764-2216, located in western wisconsin

What happened to the tractor you were looking at, was it sold to someone else? Is there an end to the the history of that tractor? Location?
