I just picked up a 1952 DC4 case. Runs great but I have oil pouring out of the shaft on the right hand side of the tractor under the inspection cover where the clutch shaft comes out of the torque tube. Where is this oil coming from? Is there a seal in there and if so, how big of a job is it to replace. Thanks!

On a couple of my DCs, the clutch cross shaft fit very loose in the case hole. A loose fit makes it hard for the seal to do its job. If you have a loose fit, a new seal may not fix the problem.

The looseness in the cross shaft is hard to fix because, as I remember, there is no sleeve bearing in the case hole. Also, the cross shaft may be worn. May have to split the tractor.

On one DC, I attempted to enlarge the hole in the case and install a sleeve bearing. That attempt did not go well because I had to use a drill bit in an elongated hole. The enlarged hole turned out sloppy. I used gasket sealer around the sleeve bearing. I built up the cross shaft and turned it down on my lathe. This got rid of the looseness.

This work was done when the DC was split for other reasons. I do hope your cross shaft fits tight enough for a new seal to work.

In my parts book, the seal number is marked out and replaced with 488561 R1. Probably a CaseIH number.

Thanks for the info. I tried to add some pics but my Iphone will not talk with my computer! Argh! Love technology! There is some side to side play on the shaft but not alot of up and down play. Hopefully a seal will at least slow it down! My 12 year old son is going to use this tractor to work up the food plots for the deer. We have a 7 or 8 ft IHC trip cultivator. It was fun watching him try to figure out a hand clutch and a trip rope for the first time! He is used to the CVT and power shift in the newer equipment! The DC is a blast to run. It has a straight pipe and really barks when you put the cultivator in the ground! I am hoping to find a case disk and planter and row crop cultivator as well.
