I recently picked up a Dearborn 14-77 side mount sickle bar mower along with a parts mower for a good price ( $300 ) plus the cost of a tank of gas to go through Hair Pin County and Switchback City to the middle of nowhere North Carolina to pick this up.
The plan is to completely rebuild this mower with new bearings, grease seals over the winter months to permanently displace my problematic Ford 501 ( named "Christine" - I'm considering an exorcism as I believe it is possessed ). The plan is strip everything down, degrease everything, sandblast, make necessary repairs, repaint, and replace every bearing seal, gasket ( even the cork ones! ) and reassemble in time for Spring.
[Edit again, Ran into a snag this evening )
Is it safe to chain the mower assembly in the upright position when I'm not using it so that I do not lose the ability to use my three point arms to the cable lift when the mower is not in use? Or does anybody have any other recommendations on how to proceed? My plan is to buy another 600 or 800 series and swapping everything over after rebuilding the machinery for a dedicated mowing tractor ( I'm going to be mowing about 300+ total for various people throughout the year ).
I'm sorry if these questions seem dense, or addled brained..I'm only ever maintained 13 acres of land with a 50" lawnmower.
Thanks
