Dearborn 2 Bottom plow

Well, I was on my way back from picking up a set of Brinly discs and cultivators for my old Cub Cadet today and on my way home I saw a Dearborn 2 bottom plow sitting out in front of a Craft Shop of all places. I've been looking for these for a while now. It's pretty rusty but everything is there, even the little coulter scraper doohickies and the owner is willing to part with them for $250.00. The tag says they are a model 10-16 or 10-160. The plow shares look quite long, I'm assuming they are 16". My question is this, is that two much plow for a 1946 2N to handle? I'm sorry I don't have pics but I didn't have my camera with me.

If it is indeed a 2x16 plow, it is far too much plow for a 2N unless you just plan to play with it.

Before you buy it be aware that the fitted plow shares if ever need replaced are almost impossible to find. My dealer says they are $220 each share if he can even get them. I found out the hard way......

Well it defintely says model # 10-16? and I think the ? is a zero but it's hard to tell, maybe it's nothing. So if it is a 16" it's out of the question? My soil is sandy and I only plan on plowing about 1/2 Acre for now.

This plow must have come along later then? Possibly in the 50's? for a Jube or NAA? It has the sweet curves to the frame, it looks like a work of art.

Despite the hype and propaganda - which persists after 70 years - that an N is a 2 bottom tractor it still functions best with a 1-16" (maybe 2-12") behind it in all but the lightest soils.

I"d say buy it.
I"ve plowed with an 8N for 57 years. It is a 2x14 plow all day, in sandy loam, in second gear. When I hit sand I could sometimes slip into third gear but usually used a Sherman step up 1st gear (higher speed than std. 2nd but slower than std 3rd). For your application I"d use 1st gear pulling 2x16s in light soil.
Having said that, your tire size also affects what you can do. If you have loaded 11.2x28 it will work. Any bigger takes away from your load pulling because of ground speed.
If you had said clay soil, I would say don"t buy it. hth and mho.

I was assuming that your tractor power is good. Plus, you aren't working all day, day after day, and needing to get 100 acres turned. Even if it didn't work for you. Craig's list or a consignment auction should get your money back.
It is time to get the garden ready to plant.

Ive plowed with two 14s from Morning till nite for weeks with a 9N. Unless you are plowing in some unusual or unbroken ground you will have no problem.

Well, that's all I need to hear. I'm calling tomorrow. Besides as was mentioned, I can always resell it. I'd like to keep some of this old iron in circulation for a while longer.
