Dearborn Back Blade

Speaking of back blades, has anyone seen a dearborn model blade, 3pt hitch, that had a tail wheel and a leveling crank that tilted the back wheel up or down to raise and lower the blade. My Dad and uncle had one with their 8n fords; it was very handy for leveling dirt, dropping dirt in low places and scraping it off high places. Dad and my uncle were well known in the area for 'fixing up' yards for people:leveling and seeding after construction, etc. I wish I could post a picture: I have never seen another like it. I remember Dad saying the tail wheel was an option they bought and added later. The top of the blade was flat and we used to stand on it for weight (down pressure!)Mark

Only ever seen one and it was at a tractor show a few years ago that featured Ford. Would sure help with the leveling problems with the back blade.

I have never seen a factory added Dearborn rear wheel either.

That said I have seen many homebrew rear wheel additions for both rear blades and rear box blades on various forums. I believe I would do the same if lots of grading was in my future.

I think it's newer - Ford, instead of Dearborn - but there's one on craigslist in WI. I'll post a link if I find it again.

Few years ago I bought a MasseyHarrisFerguson backblade with a tail wheel on a consignment auction. Took it home and modified it, and this is what I came up with. Worked better than original since it had hydraulic tilt. Maintained 1/2 mile gravel road until asphalt was put on.

That is it!! Ours did not have the remote pull lever for angling, and the flat steel under the crank rod had been reinforced with angle iron welded on each side. The rear/lower pivot from leveling crank support was in the 2nd last hole.I know it had at least 2 replacement tail wheels in its life, and a couple of cutting edges. This is the 1st pic I've ever seen and never saw another in person. Dad and my uncle had owners manuals for about everything, but not this blade, or the dearborn disc they had. I did see the same disc on here 1 time in a post-someone had bought it and posted a pic. Thanks for posting! Mark

Our farm began to be surrounded by older suburbia in the very early 1950's. Being the only ones around with tractors(and way before Bobcats!), Dad and my uncle were called on to plow gardens(people still planted gardens), bale hay, finish yards after construction, and refinish yards after septic lines were added,etc. Dad had a keen eye for seeing how water would drain and how to level a yard, or shape it up, as he used to say! Later on we also did a fair amount of bushhogging vacant fields and lots. A few had fields that we baled hay for, and they had a pony or a couple of cows. But the blade saw a lot work, and in the winter a lot of snow removal. I bet 50% of our tractor use was custom work. Mark

go on the n tractor site and look it up,
it says its a Dearborn that is all I know

it matches the description of the one the guy said his father and uncle had.

even to the fact it has a large bent over top lip so they could stand on it in hard dirt.

in my area when I was a kid, I never even saw a 3 pt grader blade much less one with a trail wheel.

ford also made a small 3 pt manure fork for the rear of the tractor. I finally saw one of those last year, I did not believe they made that either until I saw one. it would not lift the load high, but high enough to get over the side of the manure spreader and I guess that was enough.

I have seen 3 that were "FORD" brand. made different than the "DEARBORN" pictured. None of them had the tail wheel on them, but were made to have one mounted.

Didn't mean to imply the one you mentioned wasn't a Dearborn...just meant the one I'd seen on Craigslist was a Ford.
That ad has been canceled or has expired - it isn't there any more.

There is a member on the little NTC board that has one and recently posted a video of it in use.
He had the blade and the tail wheel but not the linkage to adjust the wheel.
Then he saw a photo I had posted of the same model blade I found for a friend of mine.
The one I found did not have the tail wheel.
So he asked me if I could help him buy the adjusting linkage from my friend since it is not needed if you don't have the tail wheel.
Long story short, my friend sold/shipped the parts to him and he was very happy to put the whole package together.
In the video you can see the parts. They are painted bright red.
